As the world slowly transitioned to a more advanced and futuristic technologies such as automated manufacturing, self-driving vehicles, and augmented reality, it takes long periods of time to develop due to strict regulations to make the technologies sufficiently safe and perfect to protect others who are behind it. Rushing technologies that could potentially risk the life of others requires years of research and development or could end up in catastrophic consequences. The operation of automatic technologies are highly data driven because the process relies on data input from sensors, camera modules, and specialized software to make decisions. The components that are used make up the "Brain" that memorizes what it should do, should not do, and how it would do when it detects a possible mishap. With extreme trial and error involving technologies, there is a substantial amount of data collected in order to get it just right and safe for the person behind it to use. Therefore, having a removable data drive is essential to improve productivity when taking out of an autonomous driving computer and transferring it to your main computer system where it is then taken a closer look for analysis. |

With ICY DOCK’s newly released enclosure line, we are able to maximize unused drive bay of your computer with an enclosure with removable drive trays. This is critical for industries that frequently require drive swapping because it increases user workflow efficiency by allowing data drives to transfer from one computer to another in the matter of seconds to minutes. Other benefits of having removable drive trays are easy drive maintenance and changing drives without opening your whole computer system. In addition, being that these NVMe enclosures are part of the ToughArmor series, they are equipped with full-metal protection throughout the device and tray(s) which makes them capable of holding up in the harshest environment possible. |

SATA vs. NVMe |
SATA interface has been around for many decades and used across many industries as SATA SSD/HDD is known to have high capacity and reliability. However, with the new NVMe interface, data transfer speeds are able to reach up to 32Gbps, lower latency, and delivers higher input/outputs per second (IOPS). Due to its outstanding performance, NVMe flash storage has become the new standard and slowly replacing the traditional SATA interface as it is a more cost-effective solution with faster transfer speed. It is ideal for intensive applications such as automated technologies in development, high performance PCs, and 4K / 8K / 3D media workstation. |

Removable Design |
Typically, M.2 and U.2 drives are most often hidden inside of the computer case which is sometimes installed directly on the motherboard or not easily accessible in general. However, with ICY DOCK newly released NVMe enclosures, they are brought in front of your computer system, making the drive installation and removal a more efficient process. This adds many benefits for industries that are developing automatous technology as specialized software, cameras, and sensors take a substantial amount of data alone. |
M.2 Enclosures (MB601M2K-1B - MB883M2K-B - MB834M2K-B) |
With the small 3.5” form factor enclosure, the ToughArmor MB601M2K-1B, MB833M2K-B, and MB834M2K-B mobile racks are able to fit into compact space such as self-driving vehicles and allow M.2 NVMe drives to be removable from the front of your system in comparison to where it is typically installed on the motherboard inside the system. The benefit of using the M.2 NVMe SSD is the cost which is significantly less than comparing to the enterprise U.2 NVMe SSDs; however, the M.2 is only a bare circuit board and is fragile without a protective housing. With ICY DOCK M.2 enclosures, each removable drive tray acts as a housing with a patent pending tool-less and adjustable M.2 locker for 30mm to 110mm length M.2 drives. In addition, our removable drive trays are equipped with aluminum heatsink and thermal pads, ensuring that your M.2 SSD will not experience any throttling or any failure due to drive reaching high temperature, especially when operating in heavy-load tasks. |
U.2 Enclosures (MB601VK-B/1B) – Hot-Swap Capability |
For users with U.2 NVMe SSDs, the ToughArmor MB601VK-B and MB601VK-1B mobile racks offer removable of 2.5” U.2 NVMe SSD which are typically used with enterprise systems. The benefit of using the U.2 SSD is the traditional 2.5” form factor and provide higher storage capacity comparing to M.2 SSD; however, the price tag of U.2 NVMe SSD can be quite expensive. It is ideal for users that require high capacity storage drives for their applications. |
Superior Performance |
With a substantial amount of data collected, having the highest transfer speeds available is crucial. To fully use the speeds of NVMe, each drive will use its own MiniSAS HD [dependent on model] connector, maximizing the potential transfer bandwidth rate of 32Gbps, which is 5 times faster than previous SATA standards. This makes an ideal solution for transferring data. |
EMI Grounding Technology |
What matters to us is the security of your data, therefore ICY DOCK’s enclosures are carefully designed to avoid missing any details that are often overlooked such as the proper grounding for your drive. Grounding your drive protects your drive from static electrical surge and ensuring drive is always safe during drive swapping. Our innovative and patent-pending drive tray grounds your drive the second your drive is mounted and inserted in the enclosure. |
The Bottom Line |
With technology being advanced than ever before, the way we manage storage drives is often overlooked especially for those industries that heavily rely on them in order to make it into a reality. Pair it with ICY DOCK’s newly released NVMe enclosures to increase your workflow efficiency. |
