As we have seen many changes in the data storage field with the emergence of NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express), the new protocol for high-speed storage, hardware configurations at data centers, and Tier 1 companies have remain almost the same or have considered using a combination of SATA and NVMe drives. Some are hesitant to upgrade, as they have specific concerns such as compatibility, costs of upgrading, and general usage of the new storage protocol. With the growth of data, enterprises may need to rethink how data is captured, stored, accessed, and transformed. SHOULD I UPGRADE TO NVMe OR STICK WITH SATA?
 
 
 
The choice between the two protocols would be based on the usage and applications the hardware would be operating. The SATA interface has been standard for a decade and is used across many households and industries, as it is known for its’ reliability and cost-effectiveness. With the latest interface of NVMe, data transfer speed far exceeds SATA transfer rate of 6 Gbps, reaching speeds up to 32 Gbps (or 64 Gbps with PCIe 4.0).
 
 
Another factor to consider is the price of NVMe SSDs (particularly M.2 drives) has decreased over the past recent years as it entered mass production to meet supply and demand.  Prices for the same capacity between SATA SSDs to NVMe M.2 SSDs can differ about 10 to 15%, making the jump between SATA SSDs to NVMe M.2 more reasonable. If throughput and speed is a priority for your usage, the switch to NVMe M.2 would be the superior choice.
 
PCIe U.2 NVMe (2.5” form factor version) SSDs are frequently used for enterprise industries where MTBF (mean time between failure) is an important consideration. U.2 drives generally have a higher MTBF compared to M.2 NVMe drives. Cost are significantly higher, but if longevity and speed are your concerns, using U.2 drives would be the best option.
